离任式

30 March 2011
离任式

In Japan, teachers don't stay in the same school all their lives. They get transferred out after 3 to 7 years (usually 4 years) to other schools withing the prefecture. In the day, the students will come back for a farewell ceremony for the teachers who are leaving. (This is another weird things I noticed in Japan: the students are actually on Spring vacation, so they would have to return to school for the farewell ceremony which is in the middle of the holidays.) I kind of like the ceremony. It gave the students a chance to show their appreciation for their teachers who are leaving. In Singapore, the teachers just leave without any acknowledgement, sometimes the students don't even know. It doesn't have to be a elaborated ceremony. just a simple one to show appreciation to the teachers wil be a nice gesture.

Teachers were presented flowers by the students.
Farewell dinner at night

At night,  we had a farewell party at a hotel. The food was good and the atmosphere was good. Another Japanese culture I learnt is the drinking culture. I wasn't drinking, but it is the norm to carry around a bottle of beer and start pouring drinks for others. 入乡随俗, I also took a bottle of beer and went round to pour drinks for the other teachers esp those who are leaving. I went to Kochou sensei (Principal) who cant really speak English and he grabbed an English teacher to do translation for him. (Poor EL teacher...hee...) The food was of course oiishi! The teachers left for Sinmachi for the 2nd round of party, while I went home to sleep. Today, they are all wide awake and working, amazing!
